Required coursework for research postgraduates in the Department of Biochemistry
Candidates for the degrees of MPhil and 4-year PhD will be required to follow an approved course of study and research including coursework. No coursework is required for candidates of 3-year PhD degree program.
Candidates for MPhil and 4-year PhD programs are required to pass:
- two compulsory core courses offered by the Graduate School:
- Core Course I: Introduction to Thesis Writing
- Core Course II: Basic Research Skills and Method
- one compulsory module: Research Ethics for Graduate Students
- one elective module
- three elective Faculty/Departmental-based courses offered by LKS Faculty of Medicine, one of which must be MMPH6134 Biochemistry Seminar. At least two of elective courses should be satisfactorily completed within the probationary period.

In addition to coursework, research postgraduates in the Department are required to:
- submit written progress reports (twice annually) and annual work plan;
- give an introductory seminar six months after enrolment and annual seminar on research progress;
- submit written presentation of a literature review in the first year;
- participate in weekly journal club and annual scientific retreat;
- attend research seminars, extra-departmental courses, workshops, symposia and conferences.
